You know when you get those Facebook event invites from friends? I usually pay attention to them because I’m always looking for fun stuff to do around the Bay Area. I’m typically by myself most of the time, thank goodness I don’t mind going to events alone. So when my good friend invited me to a Dinner to Support the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation I jumped at the chance to chomp on some yummy Mexican food, sip on a boozy margarita and support such a worthy cause.
When I entered Playa in Mill Valley, I instantly noticed a good amount people gathered on the outside patio and proceeded ahead. I ran into my friend, we quickly chatted, and she introduced me to the young lady who organized the event, and I was even lucky enough to grab a spot right next to her for dinner.
There’s something about being around like-minded people that always fills my little heart with joy, paring that with such a fantastic cause made my life that much brighter. I spent the next few hours chatting, eating and being inspired.
I’m sure you are chomping at the bit to find out what worthy cause I was supporting. The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation promotes peace through Education. They focus on education in South Sudan where only 5% of teenage students are enrolled in school. They also promote peace by providing an unprecedented opportunity to South Sudanese youth, their family, and their communities.
This amazing Foundation has changes hundreds of lives by providing books, teachers, meals and beds for hundreds of scholars in South Sudan. The VAD Foundation is also committed to scaling their efforts to create learning opportunities for girls, improve girls’ learning outcomes and transform harmful gender norms in society.
It’s such a worthy cause I hope everyone jumps on board and decides to support.
