I’m the kind of girl that physically prepares for a trip, especially a trip to Las Vegas, where it’s usually a whopping 100+ degrees by 10 am. It’s Vegas Baby, the place where you are encouraged to let loose, lose yourself and have fun. I prepare my body for poolside parties, late night clubbing and lots of walking. As soon as I get off the plane, I’m ready for action, looking for some incredible food to destroy all of my hard work.
After a massive pig out session, my body rejects my unhealthy choices and I’m left wondering… How do I stay fit while visiting Las Vegas? I’m thrilled to share my tips and tricks with the marvelous people at Vegas.com. There’s the basic hotel gyms, walking everywhere and avoiding carbs; but I like to get a little more creative with my health regiment. I need a plan that honors the spirit and energy of Las Vegas.
Swim with the Sharks
Instead of plugging your iPod into the cardio equipment at the hotel gym why not take it up a notch and Swim with the Sharks. The pool at the Golden Nugget features a 200,000 gallon Shark tank that houses 300 different types of fish including 16 sharks. The pool was featured on Travel Channel’s Extreme Vacations
Swimming burns up to 700 calories an hour and water walking burns up to 650 calories per hour.
Go On a Night Hike
It’s Las Vegas and most of the time the party doesn’t get going until 2 am. Instead of overindulging at Nobu and eating yourself into a food coma schedule a night hike and check out the breathtaking desert landscape. If you are lucky, you can catch a meteor shower (click here for meteor shower schedule)
Hiking burns up to 650 calories an hour depending on your body weight. There are numerous hikes to choose from, all about 10 miles from the strip
Take a Fitness Class
Las Vegas has unique, and sometime extreme, fitness classes that will keep you engaged and help you work up a serious sweat.
Insanity at Life Time Athletic – Life Time Athletic partnered with Shaun T, the creator of Insanity to design a group fitness class that will push you to the limit, challenge your entire body while building endurance.
Barefoot Boot Camp at Vegas Hot – This total body workout class is designed to challenge your strength and agility while burning up to 800 calories. Did I mention the room is heated to a whopping 98 degrees with 30-40% humidity?
Thai Yoga at Grand Spa – Just because Vegas can be extreme doesn’t mean your workouts have to be. This massage combines Thai Stretches and Shiatsu massage and is said to balance energy, revitalize the body from the inside out and improve flexibility.
Eat at healthy restaurants
Didn’t think Las Vegas offered healthy food alternatives? You are wrong about that. These healthy eateries are up to Las Vegas standard, the food is scrumptious and gentle on the waist line.
Simply Pure – Award winning vegan cafe and restaurant
Veggie House – All-vegetarian Chinese stir-fry & noodles
The Protein Source – Promotes energy, performance and enhances your well-being
Greens and Proteins – Smoothies, wraps, burgers with raw, vegan & vegetarian options
Do Anytime Anywhere Workouts
Sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day to schedule a much-needed workout session. Why not squeeze in a couple of reps at unusual times. You might look a little weird planking in the elevator but it’s Vegas, everyone is a little weird.
Ten lunges at every red light
Planks in the elevator
Ten Squats under every doorway
Ab exercises poolside
